Via Ferrata

The Via Ferrata at Honister provides a spectacular and unique in the UK ’Indiana Jones’ style adventure packed activity session. It combines mine tunnels, hair raising ladders, wobbly bridges and a ’gripping’ cargo net, all perched precariously on a steep rocky mountainside. A steel cable provides safety protection so you can savour the excitement and exposure in confidence. This is an instructor led activity with a maximum group size of ten. Mine Exploration

We have a number of exploration trips available into some of the abandoned mines of the Lake District and the Northern Pennines. These trips are a combination of adventure, history, archaeology, mineralogy and fascination at the ingenuity of the miners over the last few hundred years. These trips can be either non-technical ’walk in’ exploration trips or more technical abseiling through trips. Close to Glaramara we have the slate mines at Honister, following the miners incline up the steep rocky mountainside, venturing underground in places. There is also a trip into the Graphite Mines at Seathwaite where we negotiate four vertical drops by abseil. Further afield are the slate mines at Cathedral Caverns in Little Langdale in which we often include a short or long abseil into the quarry. At Nenthead near Alston we can offer trips into Smallcleugh, Rampsgill and Tynebottom Mines, in which we can explore some of the 120 miles of underground passages. We vary the group sizes to suit the intended trip. Timings are variable and can be adjusted to suit.

Rock Climbing

The craggy rock outcrops of Borrowdale (including Shepherds Crag and Wodens Face) have long been recognised as superb venues for the introduction and development of rock climbing skills. Glaramara's excellent location at the head of Borrowdale also means that we have easy access to many other classic Lakeland crags and climbs including Little Chamonix, Troutdale Pinnacle, Corvus and Gillercombe Buttress. A slightly longer walk give us access to that most traditional of climbing grounds, the Napes on Great Gable with Napes Needle, Needle Ridge and Tophet Wall on hand - climbs which sparked the initial development of the sport in 1886.
